Finding un-advertised job vacancies
Despite the fact that many job vacancies are advertised on the internet and in the press there are still many more jobs available than are actually unadvertised. Advertising is expensive for recruitment agencies and for employers and therefore they may choose not to advertise a particular job but instead rely on unsolicited CVs sent to them on a speculative basis. I have already stressed the importance of placing your CV on the Internet job sites and many employers will find candidates for their jobs by searching there but you should also use your initiative to search for unadvertised jobs directly.
For example if you have decided that you want to work in private banking start by checking all of the bank’s web sites to check for any suitable vacancies. You might also call the banks directly to ask if there are any new opportunities. Another option would be to visit any industry conferences or seminars. These happen quite frequently and members of the public can generally attend. These events provide a very valuable opportunity to make new contacts in your chosen industry so be sure to take several copies of your CV with you and your business cards so that you can easily provide your contact details.
